The backup camera that I have is a strip and must be mounted to the license plate holes, so I routed the wire through the hole underneath the plastic cover for the light right above the plate. Mine does the same, if you don't have the fob near your car it will be locked. Try to open trunk when keys aren't around car it will be locked. I think it is a convenience feature. There is a manual release, it's located behind a square piece of trim on the bottom of the lift gate.
